Missing Teeth Later in Life? Top 10 Things You Need to Know About Dental Implants
9 May 2026Veneers have become one of the most popular cosmetic dental treatments around — and it’s easy to see why. They can dramatically transform the appearance of your smile, covering everything from discolouration and chips to gaps and uneven shapes. But before you take the plunge, it’s important to go in with the right information. Here are five essential questions to ask before getting veneers, along with the honest answers we’d give you if you were sitting right across from us.
1. Am I actually a good candidate for veneers?
This is the most important place to start, and it’s one we love talking through with patients. Veneers work beautifully for people who have healthy teeth and gums but are unhappy with certain cosmetic aspects of their smile — things like stubborn staining that won’t respond to whitening, minor chips or cracks, slight misalignment, or uneven sizing between teeth.
However, veneers aren’t the right fit for everyone. If you have significant tooth decay, gum disease, or a habit of grinding your teeth (known as bruxism), these issues would need to be addressed first. When you visit us, we’ll carry out a thorough assessment to make sure your mouth is in the best possible shape before any cosmetic treatment is considered. Getting the foundations right is everything.
2. What’s the difference between porcelain and composite veneers?
Great question — and one that comes up a lot! Porcelain veneers are crafted in a dental laboratory from high-quality ceramic material. They’re incredibly natural-looking, stain-resistant, and highly durable, often lasting 10 to 15 years or more with proper care. They do require a couple of appointments and a slightly higher investment, but for many patients, the results are absolutely stunning.
Composite veneers, on the other hand, are applied directly to the tooth using a tooth-coloured resin material — similar to what’s used in white fillings. They can often be completed in a single visit and are a more affordable option, though they tend to be less durable and more prone to staining over time. Both options have their place, and we’ll help you weigh up what suits your goals and your budget best.
3. Is the process permanent? What does it actually involve?
This is something we always make sure patients fully understand before moving forward — because yes, getting veneers is considered an irreversible procedure. In most cases, a small amount of enamel needs to be removed from the surface of the tooth to ensure the veneer sits flush and looks natural. Once that enamel is gone, it doesn’t grow back, which means the tooth will always need to be covered with a veneer or crown going forward.
For porcelain veneers, the process typically involves an initial consultation and planning appointment, followed by tooth preparation, impressions, and then the fitting of your custom-made veneers. We’ll make sure you know exactly what to expect at each stage, and we’re always happy to answer questions along the way. This is your smile — you deserve to feel completely informed and confident about every decision.
4. How do I take care of veneers once they’re on?
The wonderful thing about veneers is that caring for them is pretty straightforward. Brush twice a day with a non-abrasive toothpaste, floss daily, and keep up with your regular visits to us for check-ups and cleans. It’s also wise to avoid using your teeth as tools (we all do it — opening packets, biting nails!) and to be mindful of very hard foods that could cause chipping.
If you grind your teeth at night, we’d strongly recommend a custom night guard to protect your investment. Veneers are tough, but they’re not indestructible — a little care goes a long way in making sure they stay looking their best for years to come.
5. What kind of results can I realistically expect?
Veneers can deliver truly life-changing results for the right patient — but it’s important that your expectations are grounded in reality. During your consultation, we’ll use photos, digital planning tools, and an open conversation to help you visualise what’s achievable based on your unique teeth, face shape, and smile goals. We’re not here to upsell you on something that won’t suit you; we’re here to help you get a result you’ll absolutely love.
The best smiles are the ones that look like a more polished, confident version of you — not a cookie-cutter Hollywood result that doesn’t match your face. That’s the kind of outcome we work hard to deliver.
